Rip Van Winkle Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

History Lesson By Irving The highly recognized fable, “Rip Van Winkle,” entertains the audience with a history lesson. The lesson is not necessarily focused on events themselves, but also the attitudes and changes of society before and after the American Revolution. When Rip falls to sleep twenty years of history lapse. Many seemingly innocent associations signify a societal change or a historical idea. Mahon suggested that the story gives us insight into internal personalities of the American colonists comparing before and after The War of Independence (par. 5). Washington Irving used imaginative literature depicting historical societal happenings during the separation of the American Colonies from Great Britain in his mythical story, “Rip Van Winkle”. Mr. Van Winkle was described as “a simple good-natured man; he was more over “a kind neighbor, and an obedient, henpecked husband” (Irving, 450).
