New York: Avon Books, 1997 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NOVEL: This novel follows a young adolescent boy named Nathan MacAllister, whose curios nature and active imagination get him involved way over his head in a mysterious murder case. Set in the late 1800s, Nathan lives with his sick mother in a small peaceful Indian village on Neah Bay. Nathan must cope with his mother’s illness, which is gradually getting worse. During this novel, the reader will experience the growth of a young teen as he becomes accustom to the Makah Indian ways and gradually matures in his adolescent life. This exhilarating novel shows the amount of responsibility it takes when times are tough and much is at stake. CHARACTERS: The round and dynamic protagonist of the novel is fourteen-year-old Nathan MacAllister. He is admired by the reader for having to step up for his father, who works full time at a lighthouse on the cape of Tatoosh, to care for his sick mother on Neah Bay. The reader also likes Nathan because of his ambitious and kind person......
