Power and the Party in Orwell’s 1984 Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell, is a novel that explores the issues of power, privacy, and government control. 1984 takes place in Airstrip One, Oceana, a fictional country consisting of what we know as North and South America, Australia, and England. Airstrip One is what London has become. Oceana is controlled by “the Party,” lead by Big Brother. The story follows Winston Smith, a member of the Party, while he explores the true motives of the Party, and his feelings about it. Total control of a person’s privacy, along with manipulation and threats ultimately leads to mindless, opinionless, powerless citizens. George Orwell reveals this control through setting, internal thought, and manipulation of language and truth. One form of control over the Party’s members is the control setting through telescreens. The telescreens see and hear all, and are a vital part of the setting in 1984. Every area directly controlled and inhabited by Party members is in eyeshot of a telescreen.
