In An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, David Hume proffers a descriptive account of moral judgments, dismissing reason in favor of human sentiment as the faculty responsible for rendering judgment. He explains our judgments as the result of sentimental experience, further shaped by principles of public utility. Human capacities of reason are far too unreliable for grounding any moral evaluation theory, according to Hume, and the role it plays in the moral process is purely instrumental.
