Moby dick Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the poem, “Reading Moby-Dick at 30,000 Feet” by Tony Hoagland, the speaker is reflecting on his dreams as a child, what they meant to him, and if they mean anything to him now. In Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick, Ishmael is living his dream of adventure by signing onto the Pequod. Both characters are dreamers, but the speaker of the poem is not living the dreamy life that he intended to as a child, where as Ishmael’s is living through his dream. Unlike the speaker of the poem, Ishmael experienced what he thought he wanted, which almost leads him towards death. Moby Dick is a combination of an adventure story and a tragedy. The narrator of the novel is Ishmael; he is a member of the Pequod’s crew. Throughout the novel, Ishmael recounts all the events of the voyage where he almost looses his life. In the novel, it is obvious that Ishmael is quite intelligent, due to the knowledge he shows through art and literature. Although the readers can tell that Ishmael has academically achieved many different subjects throughout his life, he fools......
