In 1924 born to Paul and Cora Biggers was John Thomas Biggers in Gastonia, North Carolina. His place of birth was a shotgun house that was built by his father. He was raised in a Christian home by a father who was a Baptist minister, and his mother was a caretaker for white families. His very close family focused on education and creativeness. After graduating from Lincoln Academy, a boarding school that educated black students to be teachers and ministers he entered Hampton Institute in Virginia. It was his intent to study plumbing which was practical trade.
It was Viktor Lowenfeld, an art professor at Hampton Institute that encouraged and fostered his artistic talent. During his matriculation at Hampton his work was featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in an exhibition titled Young Negro Art. Also during his undergraduate studies he was inspired to paint murals when he became acquainted with Henry Poor, who was a muralist working on the Land Grant frescoes in Old Main.
