The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass emphasizes the dehumanizing aspects of slavery. Douglass served as a slave on farms of Maryland and in Baltimore throughout his youth. Frederick Douglass was a target of slavery, which drove him to seek freedom. As Douglass grew older, he began to understand how the politics of slavery work and the lack of human rights motivated him towards his goal of freedom. The physical and mental abuse, lack of education for slaves, and the lack of importance to relationships drove Douglass to break through the wall of slavery. One aspect of slavery, which drove Frederick Douglass to seek freedom, was all the physical cruelty involved. Douglass witnessed his master taking great pleasure in whipping slaves, which included family members and friends. Some were beaten so badly that their blood ran for a half an hour leaving welts and scars. Douglass also witnessed his own Aunt Hester get a horrible beating for going out with another slave against the master’s will.
