At the age of ten I purchased a book titled Real Haunted Houses from a school book fair. Since that day I have had a confounded curiosity about the house on ocean avenue that is associated with the 1979 horror cult classic The Amityville horror. Although I never took any real time to research the subject this paper gave me the perfect opportunity. The Amityville haunting is one of Americas (if not the) most popular hauntings and possibly most famous hoax. The story I discovered while reading on this sugject was a factual account of horrific murders along with a much refuted claim of supernatural haunting. Even the idea of there being any truth to the haunting was enough to keep me clutching the covers tighter and higher at night. The story of the Amityville horror must begin with Ronald Defoe Jr., known as Butch by friends and family. On November 13, 1974 this young man was accused of killing both mother and father along with two younger brothers and two younger sisters.
