Objective Summary Essay Shooting an Elephant, an essay by George Orwell, is about a man living as a police officer in a foreign land. This essay tells of an officer forced to make decisions that reflect back on how he lives his life. His own opinions on imperialism, the Burmese people, and his own morals leave him with a challenging conflict that only he can overcome. Ultimately he shoots an elephant to please an overwhelming crowd of people. The story starts out as the author explains his home in Burma, a small country in Southeast Asia. As a man sent to imperialize Burma the native Burmese have an extreme hate for him and his home country, Great Britain. It is the age of Imperialism and Great Brittan has sent out to imperialize many “savage” lands. The author is one of these men sent to Burma in order to “civilize” the people. As a result the natives hate him, mock him, and often try to inflict physical damage upon him.
