A Powerful Nation The fictional novel The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, explores many different facets of life as well as various kinds of oppression, racism, and economic weakness in the soon to be war-torn country Afghanistan. It is here, in this chaotic as well as dwindling, setting that Amir, the son of Baba, a wealthy Afghan business man, faces true lifelong struggles with his own willpower to cope with the fact that he did nothing to stop his “best friend” Hassan from getting raped by the half German bully Assef. After this dreaded incident, Amir becomes somewhat of an inactive character and goes on living his life trying to deny what he had let happen to Hassan and finds it particularly difficult to face him with these problems and seldom, if ever, looks at Hassan as the same person for a big portion of his following years lived in Afghanistan then later in the United States in the state of California.
