November 27, 2006 Andrew Smaldone Class Position: Superstructure of Life The discussion of social class has been of great interest to sociologists and citizens alike since the beginning of social status. Marx and Weber both had an analysis central to social control and power. We as the citizen try to place ourselves in what we think as the correct class, though there is no ease to this. Some will argue that class specification is unrealistic and others will argue it vice versa, where class is what we live by. The belief or assumption that class is based upon economic position is correct, but it is only a “base” as where secondary resources express class ultimately. When it comes to my family and me, we fall into the upper class structure, bases mainly upon Paul Fussell’s analysis and the discussion of Professor Jon Witt. To most class can first be described by the appearance of you. The way we dress is judged constantly and is considered acceptable or not to some. Where we buy and what we buy is a sign of class.
