The environment in ‘Journey of the Magi’ reflects the three levels of interpretation of the journey of converting to Christianity, but in ‘Beach Burial’ Slessor explores the values of protecting humans against war, individuality and embracing equality through graphic images of the landscape. It is through the use of the imagery of setting in these poems that their values are reflected. T.S Elliot’s dramatic monologue ‘Journey of the Magi’ shows little of the joy that the birth of Christ often inspires, but instead is a poem of transition from hardship to acceptance. The three kings undertake a long and arduous journey in search of baby Jesus, suffering many hardships along the way.
