Grand theories Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Major theorists and our society tend to define learning as the acquisition of skills, behavior and knowledge. If we are to adapt in our society, we need to acquire skills and knowledge – both cognitive and behavioral. Theorists differ on their descriptions of the mechanisms of learning, depending on how they view the purpose of learning. For example, Jean Piaget was mostly concerned with cognitive learning. His descriptions of the mechanisms involved and the cognitive stages children progress through reflect this focus. Piaget believed in a stage theory of development, with children progressing toward a formal operational stage. According to Piaget, children adapt to the environment through the processes of accommodation and assimilation. First, they encounter disequilibration in their environment when their current schema, or blueprint for behavior or cognition, does not fit with the new situation.
