President John F. Kennedy once said that change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past are certain to miss the future. Emily Grieson was that kind of a woman, one that missed the future. For example, when the town was slated to get new post office boxes, Emily did not let them place a new mailbox on her property. When Emilys father died, she denied his death to everyone in town for three days, until some of the towns people came into her house and claimed the body. Also, Emily had an affair with a man named Homer Baron. One night while in a pub she overheard him say that he was not the marrying kind. She made that night his last, by poisoning him with arsenic. Emily Griesons refusal to accept change led her to a sorrowful and lonely life.
The death of Emilys dad was a tough loss for Emily. At first Emily did not accept her fathers death.
