Attempts to explain human behaviour have always primarily revolved around the nature – nurture debate. Are we creatures of our inheritance, destined from the beginning to behave according to some plan that has been set in our make-up? Or are we shaped by whatever experiences we encounter after birth, and especially those we come across in our early years? “The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines behaviour as ‘manners, moral conduct, treatment shown to or towards others’” (pg 275)1 When it comes to behaviour and children, behaviour covers everything children do and is one of the principle means by which we can recognise what they are thinking, feeling and experiencing.
