Mythology and Fantasy in Death in Venice Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Death in Venice, by Thomas Mann, is a novella that proves to be conventional and structured, yet noted for its uncivilized free and wild thinking. The author parallels characters and events in the novella to Greek mythological characters and events. This creates an alternate state of existence, a fantasy away from the reality. Such a contrast between what is real, and what is only a dream, coupled with Manns allusion to Greek figures are what make Death in Venice a piece of literature appropriately unconventional.
Greek mythology is embedded into Death in Venice, through specific characters and events of the story. The similarities between myth and the story are evident. The tragic hero, Gustave Von Aschenbach, sets out on a journey to discover the meaning of his life. He travels to Venice, Italy, by means of a long gondola ride. The well known Greek myth, Orpheus in the Underworld, chronicles a mans journey to the underworld across the River of Death on a boat ride. Orpheus searches for his life, his lover.
