Rights of Women in the Enlightenment Throughout history, women have struggled to gain equality in the eyes of the law and the public as a whole. For centuries, people believed that women were inferior to men, and many still share this view in the present day. Mary Wollstonecraft wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Women in 1792, in the midst of the Enlightenment. In her essay, Wollstonecraft offered a view of society from a female perspective, and exposed the exploitation of women. She discussed the need for political and social change regarding the rights of women, a topic that has been debated continuously over time. Women have faced many obstacles to achieve the same status as men. Wollstonecraft argued that women’s physical inferiority to men led to the idea that women are inferior in all aspects of life. She states that “A degree of physical superiority cannot, therefore, be denied…men endeavour to sink us lower…” (Wollstonecraft 62).
