Just-in-time (JIT) and the market-responsive supply chain Harrison and van Hoek (2002) define JIT as an approach to material control based on the view that a process should operate only when a customer signals a need for more parts from that process. Parts are pulled (pull system) through the chain in response to demand from the end customer. This is in stark contrast to the push system, which produces and supplies parts regardless of whether the process needs them at the time. By implementing JIT the car manufacturing industry has moved from push supply chains to pull supply chains. Haight (2003) quotes Kevin Wall, Director of MPL operations at Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin: “We’ve come from a very much a push environment to a true pull environment. One of the big challenges was in looking at the supply chain and insuring that we optimise the best total cost solution that takes into account the frequency of delivery of freight versus the inventory in the supply chain.
