A Plan of Investigation For my assessment, I plan to examine The Commentarii de Bello Civile (Commentaries on the Civil War) written by Gaius Julius Caesar and Plutarch’s “Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans”, together with writings of the other ancient historians, that relate to Caesar’s civil war (49 BC.-45 BC.) and famous Battle of Pharsalus (August 9, 48 BC.) where the Pompey legions were drastically defeated by the Caesarians. Pompey had nearly every possible advantage over Caesar but he failed to win the decisive battle which could have ended the war. How this could happen? In this assessment I will try to find the answer by analyzing those two sources. B Summary of Evidence 1. Preface It was the winter of 49 BC. When Pompey and most of the Roman Senate had moored in Epirus (in Western Greece). They had fled Rome to avoid the threat of Caesar’s invasion of Italy. Their plan was to arm themselves against the an attack by Caesar on his arrival in Greece. After defeating Pompey’s Spanish Legions Caesar would then focus all of his attention on his great opponent ......
