Since the development of civilization, terrorism has plagued societies and todays modern society is no exception. Todays terrorists groups appear to have a nihilist ideology, which is demonstrated through their acts of terrorism. Nihilism is a total rejection of all existing political and social institutions and traditional religious and moral values (Crusius and Channell459). These acts, such as the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, have no regard for human life. Their nihilist ideologies are evident through their religion, politics, and social conflicts. Since 9/11, many Americans have a misconception of what Islam is. Americans think that Islam is a violent way of life that has little mercy for human life. This misconception came about from the attention that 9/11 brought to the Islam religion. However, this is simply not true of all Islam followers. Terrorists have taken Islam into their nihilistic ideologies and manipulated it to create faith that suits their personal beliefs.
