Voltaire’s Use of Satire in Candide In the late 18th century, a French author named Voltaire wrote a short novel entitled Candide about the misadventures that the main character, Candide, faces across the world. Candide is often noted to be a great comedic work of literature, filled with irony. However, it was not just an amusing story, meant to appeal to the humorous side of society; it was a novel in which Voltaire used carefully placed, and often subtle, satire to ridicule the nature of the society in the Age of Reason. A satire is defined as: “A kind of writing that ridicules human weakness, vices, or folly in order to bring about social reform”, and Voltaire uses this literary device to ridicule most harshly the concept of love, the idea of philosophy, and the hypocrisy of religion during his time. Love appears to be a concept that Voltaire strongly scoffed of. It is very apparent in Candide, for Voltaire makes his main character a naïve and hopeless optimist whose utter obsession with the beautiful Cunegonde brings him the most pain, suffering, and ruin.
