A nation without a national government is, in my view, an awful spectacle. --Alexander Hamilton, the Federalist Papers, No. 85 The Federalists, as a rule, were advocates of a strong central government. They were the supporters of the constitution who advocated its ratification. The federalists recruited the most prominent public figures of the day, with the likes of Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay and many more. In every state convention, speakers favoring the constitution were more polished, better educated, and fully prepared than their opponents. They were somewhat pessimistic about human nature and believed that the government must resist the passions of the general public. One of their prime functions was to maintain order. The Federalists tended to place their faith in the talents of small governing elite. The members of the Federalist Party were mostly wealthy merchants, big property owners in the North, and conservative small farmers and businessmen.
