WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616) Young William was born of John Shakespeare, a Glover and leather merchant, and Mary Arden, a landed local heiress. William Shakespeare was born on April 22nd or the 23rd, 1564 in a small country town, Stratford-upon-Avon in England. He was the third of eight children, and the eldest son. William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway on November 28, 1582, William was 18 at the time, and Anne was 26, and pregnant. Their first daughter Susanna was born on May 26, 1583. Two years later they had a set of twins; Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died in childhood at the age of 11, on August 11, 1596. Nothing is known of the period between the birth of the twins and Shakespeares life as a playwright in London (c. 1592). In his younger years Shakespeare attended the Christian Holy Trinity church, studying the Book of Common Prayer and the English Bible.
