Paul Laurence Dunbar: One of the Greats To have such a short life, Paul Laurence Dunbar and his poetry have had an extremely large impact on American society in the late 1800s. Dunbar penned a large body of dialect poems, English poems, essays, novels and short stories before he died at the age of 33. Within that short amount of time, Dunbar became the first African American poet to garner national acclaim. His work often addressed the difficulties encountered by members of his race and the efforts of African-Americans to achieve equality in America. He was praised both by the prominent literary critics of his time and his literary contemporaries. Since his birth on June 27, 1872, in Dayton, Ohio, it could be inferred that Dunbar would have a successful life in writing. Inspired by his mother—Matilda Dunbar—at the age of six Dunbar began reading books as well as reciting poems. At the age of nine, he gave his first public recital. Despite being the only African American in his class at Dayton Central Ohio, Dunbar reached various, unprecedented plateau......
