The Color Purple Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

This book is comprised of over eighty letters that Celie has written to God. By using this median to tell the story the author allows Celie’s voice to be heard. Because in the story Celie’s voice is silenced by her father and no one hears her pain. Just as with Mrs. Wright in “The Jury of her Peers”, Celie’s voice is taken away. Celie’s voice is taken away by her father when he tells her to stay quite about him abusing her. At the beginning of the story Celie is fourteen years old. She writes in her first letter for help understanding what is going on in her abused life. Celie is pregnant for the second time by her father Alphonso. Celia gave birth to a girl with her first pregnancy and she has given birth to a boy with her second pregnancy. She tells God that she thinks that her father stole her first child and has killed her. Celia thinks that her father sold her boy to a married couple. Celie’s mother becomes ill and dies. Alphonso brings home another wife but he continues to beat and rape Celie.
