The Eastern Question on Europe in the nineteenth century involves the diplomatic and political problems caused by the decay of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). The Eastern Question expression does not apply to any one particular problem, instead it applies to a variety of issues raised through the two previous centuries and the twentieth century, including the instability in European territories ruled by the Ottoman Empire.
The Eastern question started when the Russo-Turkish War ended in defeat for the Ottoman Turks. In the Russo-Turkish war Russia, in alliance with Austria, planned the partition of the Ottoman Empire. Russia was looking for an adequate warm water acess to the sea due to the fact that it lacked this facility and Constantinople was perfect for this. This Russian ambition alarmed other powers such as Prussia and Great Britain which saw its dominance in the Mediteranean and felt threatened. The formation of a diplomatic alliance by Great Britain, Prussia, the Netherlands and the Austrian defeats the turks and causes Russia to begin to push towards the B......
