The United States has been a major power since its birth. There have been many wars that have involved the U.S., and some that have evolved around it. For every war there are reasons for entering, objectives to fulfill, and consequences to follow. The U.S.s active roles in the Spanish-American war, World War I, II, and Operation Iraqi Freedom are contributing to its position as a major world power. The first of the wars was the Spanish. Two events in early 1898 helped justify U.S. involvement, the publication of a stolen private letter from Señor Dupuy de Lome (the Spanish Minister to the United States) to a friend in Havana and the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana harbor on February 15, with a loss of 260 men. On April 19 Congress passed a joint resolution proclaiming Cuba free and independent , and when signed by McKinley the next day amounted to a declaration of war.
