Dehumanization found in "Night" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Dehumanization is the process of depriving an opponent of human qualities. Such a thing can lead to war crimes and genocide, thus the holocaust. Many examples of this can be found in Night by Elie Wiesel. By taking away the Jews names, the Nazis took the first step into forming them to nothing. Often, the Jews were treated like animals as they battled one another for a ration of bread. The destruction of millions of souls was due to the fact that Jews were treated as animals with no name.
To be known as a number and not your given name can have a dramatic effect on how someone sees themselves. As the veterans were engraving tattoos on their arms, Elie says I became A-7713. After that I had no other name. (39) This clearly shows that his identity was being torn to pieces. It has been said it is easier to kill a nothing and a somebody. In this case, with the millions of Jews dying, its true. Along with the obliteration of their identity comes their dignity.
