Hills Like White Elephants Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Ernest Hemingway's "Hills like White Elephants", gives readers a great chance to see how dialogue, symbolism and setting can be used to tell a story. Behind the words said by the characters, and sights explained to the readers, are hidden meanings that when analyzed, bring the story to another level. Most of this story is predominately dialogue between two characters, an American man and a woman by the name of Jig. During this conversation the reader is able to determine that the couple is at a critical junction in their relationship when they must make a decision that will change their lives forever. Without once using the word ‘‘abortion,’’ Hemingway is able to show the tension between the man and woman waiting for a train as they discuss whether she should have this operation, and his use of repetition emphasizes a sense of division between the couple. Also, by using setting Hemingway is able to help portray the conflict between the American and the woman, and to convey the idea of fertility and bareness to help the reader understand what the story is about.
