Death of a Salesman theme: wealth Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

There are many themes throughout the book Death of a Salesman. Some themes are more important then others, some themes are vague, while others are more obvious. Dreams, time and honesty are all important themes portrayed throughout the play Death of a Salesman, however, the most important is wealth. Honesty and dishonesty is used to get to the ultimate goal of wealth. Willy strives hard to be wealthy in social status, but also wealthy in material riches. He wants it so badly, that he often lies about his wealth. Never, during the story, does Willy straight up tell Linda that he has to borrow fifty dollars a week from Charley. Also, Willy states once that, “Charley is liked, but not well-liked.” This shows that Willy cares about his social status, but also, that he thinks, or at least makes it sound like he is doing quite well. Biff is quite concerned about his wealth as well, in fact, he lies to his father when talking about the deal with Bill Oliver: Biff, desperately standing over Willy: Pop, listen! Listen to me!
