Western political thought and practice has been through a few different types of government. The governments range from absolutism to totalitarianism. Some of these ideas for government have been around since the seventeenth century. Many historical figures have played a role in western political thought, such as Karl Marx and King Louis XIV of France. The ideas of government have swayed from one end of the political spectrum to the other.
Absolutism is that all the power in a state is completely under the control of the king, who claimed his rule by divine right. Divine right meant that the king had received his position as king from God and that he only has to answer to God only, not even parliament. France during the seventeenth century was looked at by numerous countries as a model of what their society should be like.
