History of Tap Dancing Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Tap dancing, its origin and artists. Tap dancing is a style of American theatrical dance where you’re using precise rhythmical patterns of foot movement and foot tapping. It originated in the United States in the 1800’s through the fusion of different ethnic percussive dancers, primarily and mainly African foot stamping dances. It is derived from the traditional clog dance of northern England, the jigs and reels of Ireland. In the 20’s it tap was nurtured in such urban enivornments as the Five Points Districs in New York City where a variety of different ethnic groups lived side by side under crowded conditions. Popular in 19th-century minstrel shows, versions such as “buck-and-wing” (danced vigorously in wooden-soled shoes) and “soft-shoe” (danced smoothly in soft-soled shoes) developed as separate techniques; by 1925 they had merged, and metal taps were attached to shoe heels and toes to produce a more pronounced sound.
