THE OEDIPUS CYCLE CRITIQUE-FORMALIST CRITICISM Without doubt, the Oedipus Trilogy is one of the most renowned and influential Greek tragedies in the world. In this ironic Sophocles drama, Oedipus kills a man but does not know that the man is his father, Laios; consequently, Oedipus puts a curse on the slayer of Laios – the irony is that Oedipus unknowingly cursed himself. This drama is hard to judge and pore the formal elements of this literary work because the original work is in Greek. Sophocles, like other Greek playwrights, wrote in elegant poetry to furnish dignity and beauty to his dramatic productions. Unfortunately, I have to work with the English translation by Dudley Fitts and Robert Fitzgerald of the original Greek language of The Oedipus Cycle. Nonetheless, I believe that Dudley Fitts and Robert Fizgerald wrote an excellent translation, which uses a clear and dramatic dialogue. The Dudley Fitts and Robert Fitzgerald translation of The Oedipus Cycle provides an unsophisticated prose dialogue that is pellucid, direct, and histrionic to restructure what theater scholars ......
