There are many different sociological viewpoints on the role of religion within society. Conflict theorists, such as Marxists and Feminists see religion as a tool of social control and oppression, creating social divisions and promoting conflict. In contrast to this Functionalist writers, such as Durkheim, view religion as providing a way in which society can be united and social divisions such as class boundaries can be broken.
