Fishing metaphor by Thoreau analyzed Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Some men go fishing all their lives without ever realizing it’s not fish they are after.” - Thoreau In his metaphor, Thoreau makes a valid assertion when he insinuates that people have to take the time out to find who they really are. A person has to search for self-knowledge and when this is accomplished, one has attained the ultimate truth. Man can go his whole life chasing after one dream and still be empty upon reaching that goal. The case of Patsy Gray perfectly exemplifies this notion. Patsy was a hard working student who strived for her father’s love her whole life. Her mother died at a young age, so he was all Patsy had. Mr.Gray imposed the idea of becoming a lawyer onto his daughter because he knew she would succumb to his pressures. Patsy would do anything for her dad, so she did not stop until she became a lawyer. Patsy anticipated that the day she graduated from law school would be a joyous occasion, but to her dismay, it was nothing of the sort. It was in that moment when she realized how empty she was inside. Patsy neglected herself and went through life ......
