What effect does total charge have on the mass deposited at the anode during the electrolysis of saturated lead nitrate Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Research Question: What effect does total charge have on the mass deposited at the anode during the electrolysis of saturated lead nitrate using active lead electrodes when a current of 1 amp is supplied for 5,10 and 15 minutes? Hypothesis During electrolysis the mass of the anode will reduce as the anode will decrease as in the formulae below: Anode Pb (s) ¡æ Pb2+ (aq) + 2e- The total charge can be calculated using the formulae below: Total charge (coulombs) = Current (amps) x Time (seconds) Therefore as the time increases while the current remains constant making the total charge to increase. Total charge is a factor affecting the mass lost at anode; hence, whether the reason for increase in total charge is because of an increase in current or time, mass will increase. Hence, I predict that as the time is increased the total charge will increase resulting in the increases in the mass lost at anode. Using total charge I can get the predicted mass of Pb lost at anode using the method below. Sample calculation Total charge for 5 minutes= Current x Time (s......
