Teaching Lessons the Ghostly Way In Maxine Hong Kingston’s short story, “Family Ghosts,” a mother uses ghost stories to teach her children valuable lessons. Each story is derived from ancient Chinese legends of Sit Dom Kuei. These ghost stories teach her children valuable life lessons through hidden meanings. In each story the ghosts are symbolically fears. The mother is essentially trying to teach her children about recognizing, confronting, and conquering their fears. Mrs. Kingston, tells her first story about herself and a ghost. In this story she tells how she often travels across a rope bridge high in the Malaya Mountains. On one trip a ghost, in the shape of spiraling smoke columns, confronts her on the bridge with high sound and wind. The ghost caused the bridge to sway. The earth appeared to dip. The sun, trees, and river blended together as the earth swirled and dipped. She fell to the bridge hanging on for dear life to the wooden slats.
