Self-hatred in the “Bluest Eye” Self-hatred describes a severe dislike for oneself or for a group in which one belongs; this is how many of the characters in “The Bluest Eye” perceive themselves. Toni Morison, the author of the “Bluest Eye” grew up during World War II. A time in which many African-Americans were shunned from society, while the rest of the nation united to fight for worldwide freedom. As a result, African-Americans developed a complex referred to as “self-hatred.” Morrison depicts the feelings and actions brought on by “self-hatred through many of the characters in the Bluest Eye. The characters in “The Bluest Eye” are not direct victims of racism. There are few remarks made to any of the characters by someone other than an African-American. However, the indirect affects of racism are tremendous. The entire town carries an enormous weight of self-hatred. The people did not need to be physically or verbally abused by the white class to feel the wrath of racism. Being shunned from society was enough to put self-hatred into motion.
