ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE IN AUSTRALIA
When the Europeans first settled in Australia in 1788 there were two existing distinct indigenous cultures namely the Aboriginal people and the Torres Strait Islanders in Australia. At present, there are approximately 409, 729 people of Aboriginal origin and 29, 239 of Torres Strait Islander origin and it is prevalent that they are one of the most severely disadvantaged groups in our society. The unemployment rate is three times higher than that of the average population and the average death of an Aboriginal person is 56 while the average death of a non Aboriginal is 77. Aboriginal children are far more likely to be placed in foster care and Aboriginal people are about fifteen to twenty times far more likely to be arrested and imprisoned Australia-wide. These figures demonstrate that despite efforts to equalise the status of Aboriginal people in recent years, they are unquestionably deprived in many areas, including health, housing, criminal justice and land rights.
