Booker T Washington Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Booker T. Washington spoke at the Atlanta Exposition where his speech was received mainly by whites. Booker T Washington spoke about industry, work and education for black people explaining how around one-third of the population was African American. Washington felt that to be respected by different cultures, mainly the whites that blacks needed to buckle down, show they could work for wages and be successful in education. Booker T. Washington believed by working hard, showing that African Americans could be successful in education and business; they would then gain the respect of the whites and the opportunity to further their equality among the races. “The opportunity to earn a dollar in a factor just now is worth infinitely more than the opportunity to spend a dollar in an opera-house” (Washington 183). W.E.B. DuBois differed from Washington in that he was an activist for the civil rights and equalities of African Americans.
