Bartleby, the scrivener is a short story which is fiction and creative. The story is told from first person narration. The story is told from the point of view of Bartlebys boss which is a lawyer. He tells the story reflecting on his experience with Bartleby. The Scrivener relates to eating and preferring not to in many ways. Both stories depict many major themes such as: isolation, doubling and nonconforming.
In Bartleby besides him and the narrator the other major characters are Turkey and Nippers, and Ginger Nut. Both of these characters have food names, which creates an irony because Bartley has an eating disorder. In this society materialism plays a vivid function which makes food such a metaphor for desire and Covetousness. Bartleby, who isolates him self and prefers not to, is ultimately killed by the lack of food. Bartleby falls into apathy by refusing not too.
