The Japanese Quince by John Galsworthy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“The Japanese Quince,” a short story written by John Galsworthy, takes place in the spring of approximately 1910 during the Victorian period in England. Galsworthy was from London and graduated college with honors studying law. Later, he decided to become a writer and composed this short story which takes place in “The City;” a financial area in London. The omniscient narrator speaks, disclosing facts about the main character, Mr. Nilson. Mr. Nilson’s home, in a suburb of London called Campden Hill, is where the story is conveyed. The problem that Mr. Nilson is faced with is his distancing from people and nature; the result of living in an ordered and structured world where his actions, style of dress, friends, lifestyle, and routine are all dictated by the rules of his society. Mr. Nilson lives a “successful” life and is almost certainly a member of the upper-class.
