Scarlet Letter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the novel The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hawthorne concerns himself with both sin and the sinner. At hand, there are many characters in the book that are sinful, but the main one who stands out as the most malevolent and sinful is Roger Chillingworth. Rogers Chillingworth is considered to be the worst sinner in the novel because he fed on the weakness of another to fulfill and energize himself. Roger Chillingworth is the true representation of evil. Roger is a villain with a physical deformity. His misshapen body is a mirror image of his soul. Once Roger finds out that Hester, his wife, has committed adultery he sets out on a mission to destroy her partner. Roger is hungry for revenge. For example, when Hester asks, “Why dost thou smile so at me? Art thou like the black man that haunts the forest round bout us? Hast thou enticed me into a bond that will prove the ruin of my soul?” Roger replies, “Not thy soul, no not thine (29)”. This means that he will haunt the soul of her partner.
