Dimitri Mendeleev
The youngest of fourteen children, Dimitri Mendeleeev was a son of the director of a local gymnasium. Dimitri Ivanovitch Mendeleev was born in Tobolsk, Siberia, on February 7th, 1834. Dimitris father died of Pneumonia when Dimitri was young. His mother educated him in the gymnasium. Dimitri showed promise in both mathematics and physics. His mother was determined to get him a proper education, she worked him very hard and pushed him to do well in academics. Her plans were diminished when their only source of income was destroyed. The family moved to St. Petersburg in search of education for Dimitri. In 1850 he was granted a full scholarship to St. Petersburg University, and was enrolled as a student science teacher. He graduated in 1856 and became a science professor in 1863. A few months after his graduation Dimitri's mother and his sister died from tuberculosis. His mothers last words to him were 'Refrain from illusions, insist on work and not on words. Patiently search divine and scientific truth.' These words stuck with Dimitri and he strived ......
