One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest- Psychology report Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Randle Patrick McMurphy is the story’s main protagonist. He was sent from a work camp after he apparently faked being mentally ill to get out of work. He does this because he feels it will be an easier way to serve out his sentence. He is full of life and energy. He is at heart a true hustler and shows this by hustling all the other patients despite their mental conditions. He is also a sexist with implications of this behavior throughout the novel. McMurphy is also a very manipulative character. This behavior plays into his gambling persona, but he also “saves” many of the inmates by showing them the life they are missing allowing them to escape the institution. The true main character of the story is Chief Bromden, who is also the novels narrator. Everyone at the beginning of the story assumes that he is deaf and dumb. He is a veteran of the war and a towering Native American. His manner of acting deaf and mute come from the fact that he feels that no one listens to him anyway.
