Explication of Themes in “The Yellow Wallpaper” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is structured as though the narrator of the short story is writing journal entries reflecting on her activities and personal experiences. The short story was published in a time when women were oppressed by social ideals and tradition, therefore each detail of the text holds specific symbolism of what a typical woman would experience in everyday life in that particular time period. While the introduction lays the foundation for the fictional realm of the short story, the climax expresses the relation of the narrator to what was actually occurring in real society during that time. The symbolism of the wallpaper, lighting, and the narrator’s reaction all support a consistent theme of oppression and internal struggle for freedom. The climax begins with the narrator, Jane, becoming obsessed with the wallpaper in the nursery on the top floor of their summer home that she was staying in.
