In the short story of a visit of A Visit of Charity by Eudora Welty, there is a lack of meaning of the word Charity. The dictionary defines charity as the love of man for his fellow men: an act of good will or affection. Instead of love, good will, and affection, self-interest, callousness, and dehumanization prevail in this story. Welty dramatize the theme that peoples selfishness and insensitivity can blind them to the humanity and needs of others.
The feeling of charity, in the New Testament sense of love, is totally lacking in
the story. Indeed, Eudora Welty establishes the relationship between the two old women. Why do they not love each other? It should be easy for them to perceive their common identity and thus maintain a sense of unity instead of one of total separation. However, they seldom speak except to contradict each other.
