Henry David Thoreau on Civil Disobedience Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Henry David Thoreau begins his argument with the theory that the best government is no government, and that this would allow us to live our individual lives to the fullest. He goes on to suggests that if there has to be government it should reflect the people as a whole and, ideally, should have a conscience that is also reflective of the people. He believes that it is hard for the government to have a conscience that can satisfy each and every individual and that, therefore, individuals will disagree with that government and should participate in civil disobedience. Thoreau goes on to object to government declared simply by the ‘strongest’ or the simple majority. The ideal theoretical assembly should be composed of people of conscience who can perceive the larger picture and acknowledge each and every minority opinion. He is convinced, however, that if a person disagrees with the actions of the government it is quicker and more effective to break the law than it is to put in the energy to change the laws.
