Pickett's Charge: The High Tide of the Confederacy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The year 1863 was a pivotal year for our nation who was at the time engaged in a bitter civil war. In the preceding two years, the South had shown its superiority on the battlefield and had won almost every time the two armies met. Things were looking bleak in the North as president Abraham Lincoln tried desperately to find a general capable of combating men like Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson. At the battle of Chancellorsville in May, “Stonewall” Jackson had defeated the Union army only to be shot late one night by his own pickets on the way back to camp. Jackson died about a week later on May 10th 1863. The death of Jackson was a big loss to the South. Next to Lee, Jackson was the Souths most aggressive and effective military commander. He had been feared for years by the the North as he beat the union army time and again. Even though Lee had lost his, “right arm” he decided he had the military strength and morale to at last take the war to the North. His goal in moving North was to hopefully beat the Union army on northern ground and then capture several nort......
