The Yellow Wallpaper - Important Symbols Explained Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Features in the yellow wallpaper represent physical and emotional strains women faced at the turn of the 20th century. Since Charlotte Perkins Gilman personally experiences life in a male-dominated society, she offers valid insights to these hardships. The facets on the wall seem solely to represent an insane asylum skin deep, but they also hold arcane issues the narrator wants to show through her “dead paper." As the narrator describes the wallpaper, certain images become embedded in the readers’ mind that embodies several interpretations. The paper itself is a pale contaminated yellow; a color in the 1890’s which stereotyped the skin tone of Asian immigrants. Immigrants are considered odd and substandard to their new societies, just as women are treated as inferiors to the male counterparts in their own society during this period. The Asian-Americans are rejected and exiled, exactly how late 19th century women’s opinions are discarded and so easily thrown to the curb.
